Schaff

Born in the mountainous forest regions of eastern Daedilade, Schaff was raised in a large machiran family until, at the age of three, he was captured by slave traders and sold to a wealthy human family, where he was forced to be the pet of a nine year old boy. Not allowed to shapeshift or speak, except to repeat innane phrases, Schaff was forced to perform degrading tricks to amuse the boy.

At the age of eight, Schaff was discovered by a traveling mage, Lord Naeven Sactaren, who purchased Schaff to be his assistant. Helping Sactaren with his spells was challenging and frought with danger, which Schaff loved, and Schaff quickly developed an affection for his master. However, it was soon discovered that Schaff was severely allergic to magic and was forced to quit being the mage's assistant.

When Magebound takes place, Schaff is thirty-two years old and caustically bitter after a lifetime of watching people take the position he would have died to have, and them not realize how lucky they are.
