Born the fourth of six children to a poor farmer in 1928, his parent's named him Arik, after his maternal grandfather. At six years of age, he met a mage and his own talents were discovered. He left his home in 1934 to learn magic, not knowing if he would ever see his family again. In 1942, at the age of fourteen, he ended his apprenticeship and began the journeyman leg of his education. It was another four years before he was able to return to his place of birth, and by that time, his mother and two of his brothers had died.

A mage of only modest power, Arik learned to be ruthless and clever. He refused to focus what power he had into any one channel of study, instead learning everything he could. He made enemies. In 1949, after a bitter mage set a 10,000 year old dragon loose on him, he staged his own death and vanished for almost three years.

In early spring of 1952, a new mage, unknown, unheard of, appeared, with more tricks than power, but a mage none-the-less. His name was Lord Naeven Sactaren. He was grudgingly recognized by the Mage's Council and quickly made even more enemies. To protect himself, he constructed a reputation, most of it built on lies, and drew heavily upon the dangerous power of high magic, which scarred him both his body and soul. The more damaged his soul became, the easier it was to do the horrible things he was reputed to do. He killed, he tortured, he raped. He was a wanted man on more than a dozen worlds.

In 1981, he discovered an almost empty planet in a thought to be dead solar system. Plants thrived, but the wildlife was noticably absent, save for a small population of marine mammals so similar to whales that he named them great whales - great because of their enormous size; more than four times the length of the blue whale. He claimed this uninhabited planet and named it Daron. In the fertile soil, he planted herbs and flowers used in spells and potions, trees to provide wands and esaels, charms and talismans - an entire planet as his personal garden.

In 2002, tired of his nomadic life, Lord Sactaren decided to build a castle on the southern slope of Traxen Peak, overlooking the tiny fishing village just beginning to spring up at the mouth of the Traxen River. He enlisted the services of a mage named Jaguan, who built the castle and then raped Naeven in the courtyard.

In 2006, Sactaren was a broken shell of a man when an off-shore earthquake sent a tsunami slamming into Traxen. The village was washed away. Very few survived, but those that did blamed Sactaren, at first for not saving them, but later they became convinced that Sactaren was the one who brought the sea upon them. Traxen was rebuilt, but the villagers hated the mage.

In 2039, Sactaren rescued an eight-year old machiran from a lifetime of being a pet. This machiran, Schaff, became his assistant, briefly his lover, and finally his closest friend.

In need of an heir, Sactaren wed Adara Ortanga in 2045. She bore him two daughters; Ilari in 2046 and Danae in 2049, but no son. When the marriage contract expired after five years, he sent Adara and his girls away, but he provided them enough money to live confortably for the rest of their lives.

Still in need of an heir, in 2061 Sactaren wed Lady Acena Adrau, a cold, bitter, greedy, calculating young woman who only cared about his vast fortune.

And in the spring of 2063, Lord Sactaren bought Lark Arren.
