Born on the planet Ashael in the year 2042, Lark was the second son of a poor farmer. His elder brother, Kasren, died of pneumonia at age 8 in 2047. In 2049 and 2050, a terrible drought struck the Bahndune area of Ashael. The government took the farm and sold Lark and his family into slavery. It was the last time he saw his father, mother and four year old sister, Caraeden.

Lark was eight and a half when he became a slave, working mostly seasonal crops - beans, strawberries, kalamer, hazelnuts - bought and sold and shipped from one province to the next, beaten and whipped and worked to the bone for four years before he fell into the clutches of the sadistic Lord Machavar.

Twelve year old Lark became the favorite toy of a sexual sadist, who needed to inflict pain in order to enjoy his pleasure. For almost two years, Lark suffered at the hands of this evil man. Then, in the winter of 2056, Lark escaped, almost freezing to death in the snow and ice before being caught by slavers and sold to a blacksmith.

As Lark matured, more and more of his masters took a sexual interest in the young slave. Some were less cruel than others, but all of them abused him in one way or another.

It was early spring of 2063 when a twenty year old Lark was accused of looking at his master's daughter funny. When his master attempted to set Lark on fire for the crime, Lark beat him with a rake and escaped, only to be captured by Erion, a slave trader, one week and a hundred miles later. Erion loaded Lark on a ship and took him and a handful of other slaves to Traxen, a small village on the south coast.

In Traxen, Lark was bought by the terrifying Traxen Mage, a hooded and cloaked figure with scaly claws for hands riding a black unicorn. This, as it turned out, was Lord Naeven Sactaren's public persona. In actuality, the real Traxen Mage was a seductively beautiful man who seemed instantly attracted to Lark, and, for the first time in his life, Lark felt the same way about another.

Assigned the task of running Sactaren's magic shop, Lark helped and made friends with many of the villagers. He saved the life of Iana, the daughter of Calae, a farmer's wife, and made an ememy of Lord Drumar, a vain and cruel man.

Lord Sactaren tries and tests Lark, pushing the young man to the breaking point, where they both discover that Lark is not as meek, nor as damaged, as they both thought.

Lark was traumatized by the abuse he suffered, equating pain and humiliation with any kind of sex or intimacy, so even though he's attracted to his master, he's terrified to let the attraction become physical. The fact that he desires his master is also very confusing and disturbing for him. In their culture, it is fine for a lord to rape a slave - a slave is property and has no rights - but it is socially unacceptable for a slave to have a meaningful relationship with a lord.
