Katica Locke

Katica Locke is the author of Magebound, Spellwrought, Cheyn's Kiss, Wererise, and Magebreak, which are being published by PD Publishing, and Unspoken, Slave to the Crown, and Faerie Christmas through Shadowfire Press. She lives in Oregon and enjoys the temperate, if a bit wet, climate. Her day job is as an Education Assistant Substitute, and while not her dream occupation, she enjoys it immensely.

Writing

Katica has been writing since she was nine years old. Her first story, if she recalls correctly, had something to to with a dragon, a unicorn and an elf, but beyond that she can't remember. Other stories include a tale of survival set on a deserted island, a fantastical adventure to save creatures called Rus from a mad scientist, and a comedy featuring a leprechaun in search of a golden dragon's tooth.

Evidently, realism was not high on Katica's list of priorities. From age 12 to around 20, vampires dominated her stories. At one point, she wrote a vast, interconnected web of characters resembling a daytime soap opera, featuring vampires as the main characters. Though the story came to nothing, one of its characters is still alive and well in the pages of Magebound. Lucifer, the vampire stallion, was simply too original and interesting to be left behind.

During the latter portion of her 'vampire years', Katica developed a new mythology to emcompass all manner of were-creatures, from common werewolves, to beasts such as werepeacocks and wereferrets. In pursuit of these werefolk are the Huntsmen, a secret society dedicated to erradication of the evil spirits that infect humans and change them to mad beasts. Aiding the Huntsmen are their ghost hounds, specially bred hunting dogs that live on the same plane of reality as the were-spirits. Ghost hounds are the only creatures that can kill a were-spirit.

After her infatuation with vampires waned, Katica created the gryphlians. Creating a social order, a caste system, a religion, a language, a calendar and a history took several years, and though her gryphlian stories were never finished, the gryphlian species influenced several aspects of her Magebound series.

Another story idea that hasn't reached fruition yet, but that has left its mark on Magebound is her Avian series, centered around various birds and their magical talents. Mentioned in Magebound are ravens, the 'finders'; swallows, the 'mages'; and herons, the 'prophets'. The mage's newspaper is even called The Heron's Voice because it also tells the future.

Currently, she's working on a number of other projects involving mages, faeries, vampires, and weresharks. She is getting ready to work on edits for Spellwrought, Slave to the Crown, and Faerie Christmas, as well as her own edits for the third Mage novel and Breach, a fantasy romance involving a sexsomniac and an incubus.
